12 Fun and Friendly Phrases to Learn for Deaf Awareness Week
To celebrate Deaf Awareness Week, we wanted to launch a campaign that would help bridge the gap between the hearing population and the deaf community, so we decided to create a fun, informative video with the help of some young British Sign Language (BSL) speakers.
It is estimated that there are over 900,000 deaf people living in the UK, and this year the theme of the week is how small changes can have a big impact on the day to day lives of people who suffer from severe hearing loss.
For many people in the deaf community BSL is the only way they can communicate with others, yet it is still not recognised as an official language and reports suggest that less than 1% of the hearing population in the UK is able to sign.
We wanted to raise awareness of this by creating a video that helps teach people some fun, essential phrases so that the next time they meet someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, they are able to start a conversation.
