Happy National Burger Day!

In case you haven’t heard already, today (25th August) is the UK’s fourth annual Mr Hyde National Burger Day.

The US has two annual National Burger Days (as well as a National Cheeseburger Day), so three years ago this event was created to fill that void for the UK. 2015 was an enormous success with over 125,000 tweets and 40,000 Instagram posts tagged with #NationalBurgerDay – let’s hope that 2016 is an even greater success.

For those who want to enjoy National Burger Day without pilling on the pounds and extending their waistlines, here are three healthy burger alternatives:


Fajita Turkey Burgers

INGREDIENTS

  • 450g ground turkey breast
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ½ red onion, finely chopped
  • ½ small green bell pepper seeded and finely chopped
  • ½ small red bell pepper seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1½ tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp thyme dried leaves, crushed
  • 1–2 tsp hot sauce
  • Handful of parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

National Burger Day

Chicken Avocado Burgers

INGREDIENTS

  • 450g ground chicken
  • 1 large ripe avocado - cut into chunks
  • 2 chopped clove of garlic
  • ⅓ cup Panko crumbs
  • 1 minced Jalapeño pepper
  • zest 1 lemon, juice from ½
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Serves 4

Thai Salmon Burgers

INGREDIENTS

  • 500g salmon fillets, skinned
  • 1 tbsp Thai green or red curry paste
  • 4 cm (1½in) fresh root ginger, peeled and grated
  • Finely grated zest of 1 lime and a pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Small handful fresh coriander, plus extra to garnish. Salt and pepper to taste
