The awards ceremony was a celebration of the companies in attendance, and why not? There aren’t too many dates in the calendar that recognises the cosmetics industry.
The masquerade didn’t hide the fact that this was a publicity exercise for Stephen Handisides’ company My Face My Body, which markets cosmetic products through its website, a cosmetics chat show on Sky TV show and lastly, a magazine partnership.
My Face My Body hyped up the event enthusiastically via social media and word of mouth, contacting nominees by phone and email. It was a friendly campaign and the success was a resounding success. The event attracted pop celebrities Imogen Thomas, who was showing off her baby bump, and Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon, which secured a bit of press from the Daily Mail.
From the video and the pictures it’s clear everyone had a fantastic time. A look at the My Face My Body Facebook wall tells you everything you need to know:
“Superb venue, food, organization & fantastic fun…. thank you… x” – Smita Mistry
Who is Stephen Handisides? Very good question. He calls himself the “Steve Irwin of cosmetic surgery”. I feel the man deserves the following paragraph of speculation. I know he exists and yet to me he gives off the shimmer of a hologram. There are a modest number of pictures of him on the My Face My Body sites but I think I get this reaction because I’ve seen his personal site, which is quite a lot like a shrine. Check out the ’interesting facts section.
Stephen is very charismatic. I have a little trouble believing he’s real because he looks like he’s escaped from a brochure. He's likeable and unbelievably strange at the same time because of the brochure thing. The email he sent out afterwards included a link to photographs of the event and a brief personal message saying, “It was a wonderful evening so I hope the pictures bring back some wonderful memories.”
You can see the supportive spirit of the awards ceremony in the video and pictures. The good will there is really pleasant. Most of these people have known and worked with each other for a while, and the industry has been crying out for a party like this, to go to a glamorous hotel and let its hair down.
The idea of rewarding the companies that make up an industry might be described as self-congratulatory but in this case I’d emphasise that it’s supportive. Next year I am sure word will have spread and there will be more people in attendance. This wasn’t a Hollywood audience choosing to big itself up rather than show humility. It was an industry that’s growing and is happy about it:
